Im honestly gonna be seated on how the sound design is going to be in Lindy's perspective. we already had a preview of it when Les exclaims out loud when he sees her fine in the trailer, how booming his regular voice actually is compared to her. imagine how loud it must be when its not voices, but footsteps, doors, etc. not to mention i want to see ANGLES, they also set the atmostphere. i need that.

Yeah, they show how his voice is booming to her and how she has to use a bullhorn in the trailer. But there are other scenes in the trailer--particularly the final one with the wedding band and her "wear it as a crown" response--when they communicate almost normally.

An interview with the series creators in Women's World Magazine.

It's interesting to hear that one of them, Jennifer Ames, came across the short story, noting that it's narrated by his point of view, and realized there was so much more to milk from it by giving the wife a voice. They said they used events in the story as a tent pole to flesh out a lot more, especially typical marriage stuff. That's pretty cool.

Oh, and there's one reveal, which I'll tag as a spoiler, even though it's something I believe I predicted in my big compendium last summer:

What makes The Miniature Wife stand out is that it doesn’t rush to that premise. Instead, it takes time to establish the relationship before everything changes, which doesn’t happen until the very end of the first episode.

What a twist of fate for good for me!
I've been with Comcast/Xfinity for almost two decades and they had special statuses for long time users. I got a e-mail the other day saying that my diamond status gets me Peacock for free. I shrugged and took it. Then I realized that the Miniature Wife is on Peacock!!!
I have Thursday off so guess what I'll be watching the premiere day.

Les's voice is loud but its not really what I was expecting of a "booming" volume, but it will do.

Someone who worked on The Miniature Wife must have read Tabitha King's Small World. Lindy is knocked unconscious by the shrinking process, then she's placed in a dollhouse that's so realistic that she doesn't realize that she's been shrunk. (Though Lindy soon finds out what's happened to her, whereas Leyna Shaw never realizes that she's actually been shrunk. She just thinks that she's lost her mind.) Plus food and other supplies are shrunk for Lindy, just like with Leyna Shaw. (Except Leyna Shaw didn't have clothes shrunk for her. She has to wear the jogging outfit that she was wearing when she was shrunk, or wear doll clothes while her clothes are being washed.)

Even if they didn't read Small World, there are certain SW tropes that we're going to see. That's part of the reason I've been joking around about similarities to my own work.

Tabitha King chose to publish her novels under her married name, not her maiden name, Tabitha Spruce. And her first name is only one letter away from her husband's first name. So her books were right next to the Stephen King books in bookstores. That's how I found out about Small World, after I started reading Stephen King in 1984. I actually originally dismissed Small World the first time that I saw it in a bookstore. I figured that there couldn't be a shrinking-themed book for "grownups". When I was at Tusculum College, the library in Greeneville, Tennessee had a copy of Small World. I was able to look at it in more detail, and discovered that it was indeed shrinking-themed. I was going to check it out, but it turned out that people who weren't residents of Greeneville had to pay $5 for a library card, which was more than the cost of the paperback edition of the book. So I had to wait until I was home for the summer to buy it. That was four years after the paperback was published, and five years after the hardcover was published. So Small World was popular enough to remain in bookstores at least that long. And in recent years there was a signed limited edition of Small World. I seem to remember that it sold out at the publisher within days of being announced for pre-order. (Though small press editions of her husband's books, which usually aren't signed, sell out within MINUTES of being announced for pre-order.) So it must still be popular.

Hey there everyone! We're in the final stretch. As I post this, blackbat's countdown is at just over 5 hours until the episodes drop here in the US. As we go into this, let's just remember that the series wasn't created specifically for our community, so it may not scratch all the SW itches we have. There may be some things that exceed our expectations, and other things that fall short. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and reviews--art is subjective, after all--but please don't yuck anyone else's yum.

At one point, I suggested having a different thread to discuss each episode. After much debate about that, I realized it was a little excessive. However, I still think it's important for people to be able to watch and engage at their own paces. Thus, I've created three discussion threads. One thread for the first three episodes (1-3), one thread for the next three episodes (4-6) that can include the first three episodes, and one thread for the series as a whole though focusing on the final four episodes. Please be respectful of people's viewing abilities/patterns--and their desire to not have future episodes spoilers--and keep the discussions limited to the appropriate episodes.

I came across a review today. It wasn't particularly spoilery, especially for me since I've looked for every detail I could these past two years. This was from a reviewer who got advance screening of the series as a whole. These are some of the key takeaways, which I'll put behind a spoiler wall:

• Elizabeth Banks and Matthew Macfadyen really throw themselves into the roles. Any time it focuses on their relationship, they're fantastic.

• There are some cool sequences when Lindy deals with everyday objects while small

• When the series tackles their marriage, it's sincere and insightful

• The supporting characters and some of the subplots aren't as interesting, are sometimes annoying, and a lot of their stuff could/should have been miniaturized from the plot

All that being said, I feel like it's Christmas Eve after waiting this long, and I look forward to "opening the present" tomorrow morning. I hope we all get something memorable from this show, because who knows when we're going to get something like this again. I can't wait to discuss it with all of you when I get around to finishing the series this weekend. Enjoy!

Yup, just over two years since the announcement. It's crazy that it's been that long and surreal that it's finally here.
