It's funny that Mattel patented Barbie, since Barbie was copied from a German doll that was based on a popular newspaper comic about a prostitute that Ruth Handler (co-founder of Mattel) saw while on vacation in Europe. (Though according to "The Toys That Built America" on the History Channel, the BILD Lilli doll was "anatomically correct".) I think that the manufacturer of the BILD Lilli doll sued Mattel for copying their doll, and Mattel ended up buying the rights to the BILD Lilli doll to settle matters.
