Looking at pre-20th century art, (Third pic above) it is notable how ridiculously passive the women are. Being vulnerable is one thing, but the girls in the background are barely reacting to what is happening. It wasn't like that in real life even then. Why is the art like this? Would a man want a wife so unable to react to anything? She'd be such a burden.
