Requesting opinions: music for SW animation videos

Post by pokonota » Thu Jun 15, 2023 5:14 pm

Hi guys. I wanted to ask: do you think music could really enhance a SW animation video?

And what are your suggestions. Do you know any music that could fit the theme of SW?

My personal opinion about music : less is more. I don't mind ambient tracks, sutble audio cues to convey different emotions, but anything over the top is annoying and distracting.

Sound design overall can really bring a size video to the next level. Can't remember exactly which one, but one animation had the pitch and volume of the SW modified as she shrank... like, she was screaming and her picth gradually went higher and her scream fainter as she got smaller and smaller. That was pretty cool and made it somewhat more realistic.

Are you working on new stuff?

Don't do animations or videos. But have found ominous ambient sounds really add something when I compile a slide show of some my work (just as a private experiment). I've become particularly fond of creepy mocking laughter and soundtracks mimicking the wailing sounds from the damned in Hell. Creepy organ music sometimes works nicely as well.

I like to experiment with different sounds for SW themes that have an air of menace about them, which enhances the woman's helpless predicament.

Music is good, especially if you don't have much audio otherwise. Knowing what kind to use and how to use it is all part of the artistry. I agree with Lurk and Sally above, but of course there are exceptions to everything.

Some tracks that sound SWish to me:

Some thoughts on music scoring:

Lyrics aren't very important. The tone and atmosphere of the music dominate. There are a few exceptions to this, such as illustrating a song that tells a clear story with prominent lyrics.

Music can be used ironically. Example: playing a powerful action theme while the visuals are pratfalls and screwups. I'm not sure how you'd do this in an erotic SW context though.

Raising the pitch of of a popular song can have an interesting effect, making the vocalist seem smaller, and perhaps denying them their originally intended power. Modern software can control the pitch and speed separately, so higher + slower might be an interesting thing to try. Of course this gets into the lyrics issue again - if you do this you might want to start with the song, and then decide what visuals and story it inspires.

There are royalty free music libraries online. Some also have sound effects and other useful things.

Edit: https://incompetech.com/

Expect to spend an hour or two searching for good tracks, and also read the agreements carefully. "Royalty free" does not mean you don't have to pay for it, and some sites can have confusing agreements.

Here's one that has quite a bit of potential. The Confessor by Joe Walsh. The actual lyric is:
"Strip you down to size.
Naked as the day that you were born"

I would almost swear that I once hear a cover that was "Shrink you down to size"

There's a long instrumental intro, so skip to the middle if you are impatient.

Just a couple more suggestions.

"Soul glove" and "Tiny dancer" by Elton John. Some of the lyrics work quite well.

Just heard Tiny dancer today on the radio and considered a college on it, but I don't know Soul Glove.

Animationfan is scoring a track, so it sounds like the lyrics are irrelevant. It is the sound that matters. Here is an obvious one.

Conscious: E-Rock: Shrink ray
https://audiodregs.bandcamp.com/album/conscious

It's the fifth album on this page.

Cyric: Love Electric
The whole album is good because the artist has such a sweet voice, and a nice bouncy tone to the instruments.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paJiebQ ... Circ-Topic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxzcOLF ... Circ-Topic

This one is good as is, but I have pitched up version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyQHKJM ... leriumVEVO

Slayers Next (soundtrack album): Never give up
Can't find a link to this. The powerful goddess lyrics become ironic when pitched up.

Björk songs are good for pitchup. The Hunter:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0dihHd ... tningblade
I found a version without her being Emo and bald, that kind of ruins it.

Guys, I want your opinion if this sounds good for an op animation for the teeny Heidi Haak character I have in my gumroad.
And what kind of scenes come to mind (between Heidi and her giant)? To me, this music could be about how the giant woman regards Heidi

It sounds a bit bland to me. Nice pleasant anime music but no real direction to it. It could work, but IMHO, it would not add much.

There is a genre of pitched up music called "Nightcore" that is about music pitched up about 20%.

Tatu Not gonna get us:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4lrV2T ... SkyeFennec
This one is maybe pitched up too much, Tatu works without it.

God is a girl:

Nightcore in general:

I have another question: I found some music that really fits an animation I want to make, but it's not mine of course. Do you think it'd be a problem if I use it anyway for a new animation I sell on my Gumroad? Or could it be like, there would be no problem after all?
