Philippine comic strip

Post by ensmallen » Thu May 30, 2024 12:37 pm

So, years back, a friend here in the Philippines took me along to check up on their old college professor. Turns out the guy had scrapbooks full of local comic strips going back decades. So, there's me—already into SW back then—picking one up and somehow stumbling on the one with SW.

Sadly, the panels I found a few minutes ago on this Facebook page (might need membership to see) don't have the SW parts. :(

And they're in Tagalog, the main Philippine dialect.

(Note: The poster uploaded the strips in reverse order so you have to start reading/trying to make sense of it all/staring from the last one.)

So a band of astronauts with hard-ass military backgrounds somehow end up on a planet that looks like a mash-up of Conan and Hindu mythology. They get on the bad side of the local tyrant/all-powerful wizard, but get in good with the local resistance leader, Andromeda. A sword-slinging warrior woman armored up like Red Sonja and drawn by an artist doing regular work for DC Comics's horror/fantasy titles at the time. (1980s.)

So after epic battles and face-offs against god-like beings, the MC Andromeda somehow ends up on modern-day Earth. Only she's six inches tall in nothing but her birthday suit, and she's in the freaking Philippine jungle struggling to survive after going from badass barbarian babe to suddenly the smallest and most vulnerable thing around.

Somehow, she does. Until these big-city hunters blunder into her little patch of paradise and separate her from her tamed animal friends and get into a game of cat and almost-literal mouse with her. Somehow, the nicest of them ends up taking her home and falling in love with her, keeping her like a pet until she runs away for reasons I couldn't recall because that's about as far as I managed to read.

If it isn't painfully obvious, this is my SW holy grail and I'm just really curious if anyone here has something to share. Longest of long shots.

No luck digging up more of this so far, but a bit of the artist's (non-SW) work. WARNING: If you're susceptible to being offended, you will be. NSFW.

Might need joining the group to see the scans but some other snippets of Philippine comics ("komiks") with SW content posted on FB. Sorry, gonna need a Tagalog to English translator for these:

Thumberella (late 70s?)
A girl grows up to no more than a few inches tall thanks to her mom pissing off the local engkanto, but finds out she's got friends in low places (the local lambanas or Philippine fairies).

Winderella (1990s)
Basically a remake of Thumberella, these scans show our lovely six-inch-tall teenage heroine falling in love with a handsome stranger:

Your "holy grail" sounds like a great SW and power reversal scenario. I really hope you can find it! Have you considered asking people in the Philippines? Do you have contacts there still? I might have one who could help, I don't know if these works could be found in libraries over there? Or maybe comic book shops?

Also, as someone with no longer a Facebook account, could you repost or share Thumberella and Winderella here?

The poster hasn't been active in years, unfortunately, but a library's a good tip, the Andromeda strip appeared in a newspaper after all, just need more data to narrow down the search. I've seen old komiks sold online before too, haven't found what I need on ebay though. Yet.
