Inexplicably and unexpectedly, Karen Wheeler woke to the feeling that something was wrong.
The morning light slanted in through the bedroom window, harsh and oversized, washing across the sheets like a spotlight. Karen blinked, squinting against it and then froze. The familiar world of her room no longer made sense. The bedspread stretched away from her like an open field. The dresser across the room loomed impossibly high, its edges vanishing upward into shadow.
She swung her legs over the side of the bed and tried to stand, feeling her stomach drop as the floor rushed up. Her balance failed instantly, and she staggered, arms windmilling in air, before collapsing onto the carpet. It felt coarse beneath her hands; each fiber thick as rope. Her heart slammed as the truth snapped into place. She was tiny. Impossibly tiny.
Karen clapped a hand over her mouth, eyes wide.
Overnight, whatever strange force had been creeping through Hawkins had finally reached her. The shrinking contagion.
