Janice Logan in Dr. Cyclops (1940).

A great publicity photo of Janice Logan in Dr. Cyclops (1940). This movie is just crying out for a quality remake. Even with the Hays Code in place they got away with a lot such as the scene where Doctor Cyclops bundles up Mary's cast off dress!

Interestingly, the Hays Code was made law in 1934. I wonder if some of the scenes from King Kong '33, had anything to do with it......The scenes of Kong stripping Wray and the scene where she falls into the ocean with Armstrong, where you could see everything in her shredded and now wet dress surely raised the ire of the Bible thumpers of the day.

I think that Mae West ("Why don't you come up and see me sometime?") was one of the reasons that the Hayes Code went into effect. She recently was the Star of the Month on Turner Classic Movies. A promo included a clip of the ending of one of her movies. As she walks away, the words "The End" are superimposed on her rear end, and move with her.

And there were the pre-Code cartoons, especially Betty Boop, who may have been affected the most by the Hayes Code going into effect:

Different YouTube member, some duplication, but some other clips, including the "perfume gag" from "Betty Boop's Penthouse":

(And there's even more that was left out of these videos, including Betty Boop shrinking out of her clothes after she drinks "SHRINK-OLA" in "Betty in Blunderland", Flip the Frog saying "Damn!" after he trips over a cat and falls down a flight of stairs in "Room Runners", and someone flipping the bird in the Willie Whopper cartoon "The Air Race".)
